Today I picked up the final missing part for our Chandler & Price 8x12 treadle platen press. The original crankshaft had been broken in an unfortunate fall during one of its many moves. I was able to locate a shaft for a 10x14 Chandler & Price which looked similar. Well, as it turned out, it was not exactly the same. The tooling on either side of the shaft did not match the diameter of the 8x12. Press manufacturers were never very good at interchangeable parts.
Our friend Chris Heon at Easthampton Machine & Tool, Inc. was able to put the shaft in one of his lathes and mill the surface to the proper measurement.
My Hampshire College interns Jake and Eli come in today at 3:00 and we will start putting it all back together. So exciting. The question is should I keep the press raw metal and just bathe it regularly in WD-40 or paint it?
